Revolutionary Trunk Mount Carrier Design

The Thule 9001 raceway 2-bike trunk mount carrier represents a revolutionary rack concept that merges the premium features of a hitch rack with an incredible ease of storage. The raceway 9001 includes Thule's patented FitDial technology, which allows for fast, easy use with a wide range of vehicles. To fit the carrier to varying trunk configurations simply lift the unit's release lever and open the frame position to the desired opening, locking it into place with a push of the release lever. Molded rubber pads provide firm hold to vehicle and protect against scratches. Each possible position of the frame opening is marked by a number. Noting this makes future fittings of the carrier even faster.

Once the raceway 9001 is fitted it secures to vehicles via Sure-Tight high strength cable attachments that provide a hold that is much better than anything possible with straps often used with other trunk mount carriers. Four cables extend from the core of the rack, two at the top and two at the bottom. Cable tension is released at the flip of upper and lower levers. At this point cables can be pulled out to the exact length needed for your vehicle configuration, and once hooks at the end of cables are in place, they are tightened using the side-by-side large and smaller dials at the side of the carrier. Although rigid, cables are padded, meaning they will not scratch vehicles. After the rack is mounted on a vehicle, loading bikes is easy. The Raceway 9001 holds two bicycles secure to the bike arm via the combination of narrow cradle arms with bike cradle pads and straps. Also included are rigid no-sway cages that hang down from the bike arm, where they attach to bike frame's main vertical tube and deliver a bracket like hold on each bike frame. Along with these two stabilizing elements, the raceway 9001 includes a strap that is run through the bike(s) to secure their lower halves to the frame of the raceway 2001 carrier. When bikes are removed, the upper arms of the rack fold down inline with the main body of the rack at the release of a few levers allowing for a more streamlined shape and easier driving and parking abilities.

Two-way Locking for Security

The Thule 9001 raceway 2-bike rear mounted bike rack features locking security on two levels. First, it is packaged with an integrated cable lock extending from the bike arms around the frame cradles so bicycles are protected from theft. The carrier itself is also protected by the inclusion of locks and keys for securing the Sure-Tight ratcheting cables in place, which locks the entire bike carrier to the vehicle trunk or hatchback.

About Thule

Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. The Thule Group is a world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it., April 25, 2011

New for model year 2011 is the Thule raceway 2 and 3. I purchased the Raceway 2 from Niagara Cycle works because they are offering the model for $ 197 ($230 is the normal retail) with free shipping and no tax. Decision to buy online is a no brainer. Package arrived comprimised but goods were intact. Bike rack is incredibly easy to use and locks in place to prevent theft. I have used the rack several times and it is solid for what appears to be mostly polymer construction. Rack folds easily and stores in truck when you do not want it in the way or to prevent theft. One could purchase a cheaper bike rack for a fraction of the cost, but Thule has a reputation for quality products and has impressed this customer. I do not believe I will need another bike rack soon but when the time comes I would purchase another from Thule.

Pros - Incredibly easy to use.
- Folds when not in use.
- Fast setup (can mount on a car in a few minutes, takedown in seconds)... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Thule Rear Mounted Rack Not for the Car-Loving Cyclist, May 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Thule Raceway - 2 Bike Carrier (Sports)
Thule's 9001 Raceway Rear Mounted Bike Rack is an innovative, effective product when it comes to mounting bikes securely to a vehicle. This benefit, however, comes at the cost of damaging your vehicle. The rack rests on either the rear lip or trunk of most make and model vehicles, but the cushioning is not sufficient to prevent DENTS IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I'm still trying to work out this issue with Thule, and I anticipate they will pin the blame on operator error. However, I am a cycling and automotive enthusiast who always carefully follows directions.

Thule's bike rack is, indeed, impressive, but it's a "no go" if you love your car more than a bike rack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome bike rack!, April 23, 2011

This bike rack is a "no-brainer" for those who don't want to hassle with straps and figuring out how a bike rack will fit on their car. Super easy to set it up on the car and get your bike strapped-in and be on your way to do some riding. Great sturdy design, unlike some of those tube-style racks you see out there...however, it does weigh a little bit more than those other racks. But if you want something that's built to be sturdy then you'll really like this rack. It's become a permanent fixture on my car because I use it pretty much every day, but if you want to take it down, it's really easy to unlock the straps and reel everything back into the unit, fold it up and stowed away for storage.
